Grade 4 Explores Local Biodiversity: A Head Start on Earth Week

At the International School of Florence (ISF), our students aren’t just reading about the environment—they are living it. This week, Grade 4B took their learning outdoors, trading the classroom for the rich, natural landscapes of our campus to kick off an early celebration of Earth Week.

Hands-On Learning in the ISF Ecosystem

As a core component of their current Inquiry Unit on Biodiversity, Primary School students headed down to the olive grove and nearby creek. These local sites serve as a “living laboratory” where students can observe the delicate balance of Tuscan flora and fauna firsthand.

During the excursion, Grade 4B focused on:

  • Identifying Local Species: Recognizing the plants and insects that call our olive groves home.
  • Water Ecosystems: Observing the health and flow of the campus creek.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Discussing how local actions impact global conservation efforts.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Understanding our local environment is the essential first step in protecting our planet. By engaging with the ecosystem right outside their door, ISF students develop a deeper connection to nature and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.
